  • Botanical Name: Calathea 'Ornata'
  • Common Names: Peacock Plant, Zebra Plant
  • DescriptionCalathea Plants, native to tropical South and Central America, Africa, and the West Indies, are grown primarily for their beautiful, brightly colored, upright, oval leaves. The various Calathea varieties have leaves with purple undersides and various vibrant colorful patterns on the top side.
  • Care: Calathea Ornata tolerates different lighting conditions, including medium to low-light spots. Its ideal lighting is bright, indirect light but it can also grow in partial shade. Avoid harsh direct sunlight to prevent sunburn.

This plant needs regular watering to keep its soil slightly moist. Check the soil twice a week and water when the first 2 inches of the top soil is dry.

This plant needs well-drained, nutrient-rich soils that are able to retain some moisture. Choose a peat-rich potting mixture.

This plant thrives in temperatures of 65°F-85°F and grows well in normal room conditions. It does not do well when the temperature drops below 50°F. Do not place this plant near venting systems or air-conditioners. This tropical plant needs a humidity level of at least 50%, so you should use a humidifier and mist your plant often when your indoor environment is dry.

This plant should be fertilized once per month during the growing season (spring/summer) with diluted houseplant fertilizer. You can also feat this plant with a slow-release fertilizer once or twice per year.

Ornata is considered non-toxic and safe for pets.
